Understanding Ventricular Septal Defects

A ventricular septal defect, or VSD, is a hole in the heart. Specifically, it is located in the wall of the heart – called the septum – that separates the lower chambers of the heart – the ventricles. This means that blood rich in oxygen gets pumped back into the lungs instead of going out to the rest of the body. As a result, the heart has to go into overdrive and work harder to circulate oxygen-rich blood throughout the body. Ischemia occurs when the heart is not getting enough blood as a result of the presence of VSD.

Causes of VSDs

VSDs can be congenital, meaning present at birth. In this instance they may be discovered while the baby is still in the womb, shortly after birth, or well into adulthood. Symptoms depend on the size and number of VSDs present. Some VSDs will close on their own without the need for surgery. There are certain medications that can help alleviate symptoms such as shortness of breath or trouble nursing in infants with VSD.

They can also occur later in life as the result of a heart attack or after heart surgery. In this instance the treatment will depend on the individual circumstances involved. We work closely with our patients and their family members to strive for the best possible outcome.
