Understanding Coronary Artery Disease

Blood flows to your heart along a path of major blood vessels called coronary arteries. When they are healthy, these smooth and elastic pathways enable oxygen and other nutrients to travel to the heart. Over time, these arteries can become narrower due to the buildup of plaque, or fatty deposits, and cholesterol. This can cause damage to the arteries as well as blockages which prevent blood from flowing to the heart as it should. Called coronary artery disease, these blockages can cause:

  • Angina (Chest Pain)
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Heart Disease
  • Heart Failure
  • Heart Attack

If you think you or a loved one is experiencing a heart attack, call 911 immediately.

Risk Factors of Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is the most common form of heart disease in the United States. Men and those over the age of 60 are more at risk. Additional risk factors associated with coronary artery disease include:

  • Smoking
  • High Blood Pressure
  • High Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Lack of Exercise
  • Unhealthy Diet
  • Being Overweight
  • High Stress

Diagnosing & Treating Coronary Artery Disease

In addition to conducting a physical exam and ordering bloodwork, we will discuss your symptoms and learn more about your medical history. We will also call for diagnostic tests that may include an echocardiogram, CT scan, and an exercise stress test.

Immediate treatment will depend on the extent of the disease. Lifestyle changes such as quitting smoking and adopting a heart healthy diet will be important first steps. There are certain medications that may be prescribed to decrease overall cholesterol and/or alleviate symptoms. If necessary, procedures such as an angioplasty or coronary bypass surgery may be recommended. Your team of doctors will strive to ensure you understand the extent of your coronary artery disease as well as all of your options for treatment.
